Earthed to the Ground

I miss being small.

A combination of being small and being new to the world grants children a fantastic attention to detail that most adults can only emulate through a concentration of effort.

Being constantly near to the ground was always an enjoyable state for me, especially since my childhood involved a lot of walking on concrete.

Walls, gardens, hedgerows... all benefitted from closer physical proximity, their instrinsic beauty becoming literally more distant but undiminished as my physical height gradually increased.

Being small also made buildings seem very large and hence very important and even a bit scary. (Standing at the foot of Milan cathedral looking up was a much more dizzying experience than standing on the roof looking down, for example).

Being taller has however enabled a less buttock-clenching appreciation of architecture.

Which is nice.

Its so true, having two little ones of my own, you learn so much and miss it with a melancholic feeling that cannot be shaken off.
