25 Wonderful Things No.15

I was trying to avoid "my favourite..." style entries here, but there are just some things that one feels rather strongly about....

Thursday 15th December

Being an unabashed teenage Motorhead fan (as opposed to the adult one I am now), I had heard tell that Lemmy used to be in a hippy band called Hawkwind.

And after asking around to find a copy of an album he appeared on, I ended up with a C90 tape of "Space Ritual", and my life was never quite the same again.

Toured in support of their third album "Doremi Fasol Latido", the Space Ritual was a carefully orchestrated sonic and visual assault which has become almost legendary and witnessed Hawkwind at the apex of their pummelling psychedelic space-rock.

Fragile hippies they weren't.

The aural equivalent of a tribe of bikers on a mammoth drug-binge, it really is jolly exciting stuff.

The plain black C90 cassette was swiftly painted a variety of day-glo colours, and ended up travelling everywhere with me in case of sonic emergencies in conjunction with various substances.

Sex, drugs and rock 'n roll?

Two out of three was always more than satisfactory for me....
