25 Wonderful Things No.3

Continuing the Monoid One 2011 Christmas countdown, and it's back to simple pleasures again.

When I was but a lad, the level of domestic technology we casually enjoy today would have made me wet my prepubescent space-pants. (No, not the infamous Tom Baker y-fronts.... I was never that lucky).

Of course, now that I'm older, I'm more concerned with ethical matters. I don't subscribe to a Whig view of technology any more than I do a Whig view of history, and no longer consider handheld computers (with lots of exciting buttons to noisily punch) to be a desirable end in themselves.

Likewise, I'm not an enthusiastic convert to flatscreen LCD televisions. Picture quality always seems somewhat dull and lifeless compared to good old CRT, even more so now with analogue a thing of the past.

And sensibly-sized CRT sets are still the best way to view your precious VHS tapes. (Remember them?).

But such comparisons are nothing new. Lovers of valve amplifiers and vinyl records have similar axes to grind.

Also, I think I just miss the concept of  television as furniture, and miss being able to put tablelamps on them....
