So, when does a night out in Pocklington cost in excess of £300?
When you take your mother to see John Shuttleworth at the Arts Centre, and crash the car in the snow on the way back home...
And he wasn't all that great, to be honest.
While it was admittedly billed as a preview show for the second leg of his current tour ("Out of Our Sheds"), there seemed to be a strange lack of direction compared to other times I've seen him. And while he is hardly in the same bracket as Stewart Lee when it comes to painstakingly sculpting his material, Shuttleworth does seem to need a loose concept on which to hang his metaphorical hat.
So, it was all a bit rambling but certainly not offensively unpleasant.
Setlist Surprises: "Y Reg" demoted from encore to the main set.
Disappointments: No supporting characters (Tordoff, Appleton, Worthington). No plot.

All in all, it was fun while it lasted, and I am very happy that my mother had an hour and a half of joy in her generally joyless life. It's a shame that the evening was marred by the weather and my reckless optimism in being able the return her home.
So once again, many thanks are due to the kindness of strangers. This time, my gratitude goes to the couple that just happened to be driving past and not only towed my car off the road to await repair, but also gave us both a lift back to base...
