Publicity Shots from Hell No.33

Readers of the TARDIS Eruditorum blog (and the subsequent spin-off books) may have encountered what is referred to as "The Problem of Susan". Here, the author moans and grumbles at length about the non-depiction of a teenage character's developing sexuality in a television adventure series (Proper Doctor Who) where such things quite frankly were never, ever on the agenda.

(This will, in future posts, be rechristened "The Problem of Sandifer". Which is not his only problem, by any stretch of the imagination. Anybody interested in watching a liberal American academic type working himself into a comedically furious lather, should go and read his essay on alleged racism in "The Celestial Toymaker"...).

Anyway, with the recent and long overdue appointment of a more mature actor in the lead role, yer Modern Who is now posed with something of a dilemma. Namely, with the modern series having been sexualised (and therefore utterly ruined) in order to appeal to contemporary tastes, how does the Doctor avoid appearing like a haunted old paedophile?

Being accompanied by more mature women has already been mooted in fan circles, and I am reminded of a similar occasion when Jon Pertwee was seen to be looking more than just a little pleased with himself...
